History of Mifflinville
Mifflinville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located along the Susquehanna River in Mifflin Township, Columbia County. The community’s origins date to the late eighteenth century. In 1794, John Kunchel and William Rittenhouse laid out a town initially called Mifflinsburg. The name was later changed to Mifflinville in honor of Thomas Mifflin, who served as governor of Pennsylvania during that period. The founders anticipated that the community’s location between Wilkes-Barre and Sunbury could eventually make it an important regional center, and they planned unusually broad streets and reserved land for public buildings.
Mifflin Township was formed from part of Catawissa Township in 1799. During Mifflinville’s early development, limited transportation connections restricted significant industrial growth. Railroad service eventually improved access to the area, while small-scale industries included tanning and, for a period, blasting-powder production. The community remained closely tied to the surrounding agricultural landscape and the Susquehanna River. Today, Mifflinville is the primary settlement within Mifflin Township and sits near Interstate 80 and Pennsylvania Route 339, providing convenient connections with Berwick, Bloomsburg, and other communities in northeastern Pennsylvania.
