History of Lock Haven
Lock Haven is the county seat of Clinton County and is located near the confluence of Bald Eagle Creek and the West Branch Susquehanna River. The area was settled in the late eighteenth century, when Fort Reed was constructed as a frontier fortification along the river. The community that became Lock Haven was formally laid out in 1833 by Jerry Church and Willard Church. Its name reflected the canal lock constructed nearby and the area’s reputation as a protected or “haven” location. The completion of the West Branch Division of the Pennsylvania Canal in the 1830s helped establish transportation connections that supported the young community. More information about Lock Haven is available through the City of Lock Haven.
Lock Haven grew rapidly as the lumber industry expanded during the nineteenth century. The surrounding forests provided abundant timber, while the river, canal, and later railroad connections made it possible to transport lumber and other goods to larger markets. Lock Haven became the seat of the newly created Clinton County in 1839, was incorporated as a borough in 1840, and became a city in 1870. Manufacturing later became an important part of the local economy, with Piper Aircraft becoming particularly closely associated with Lock Haven during the twentieth century. The city also developed as a regional center for education, government, and commerce. Today, its riverfront, historic downtown, aviation heritage, and university campus remain defining parts of the community.
