Founded in 1787 by Captain Anthony Selin, a Revolutionary War veteran, Selinsgrove has grown into the largest borough in Snyder County. The town’s early significance as a trading hub began with George Gabriel establishing a trading post on the Isle of Que in 1754. Throughout the 19th century, Selinsgrove thrived as a canal town along the Susquehanna Division of the Pennsylvania Canal, which operated from the late 1820s until 1901. The arrival of the Sunbury & Lewistown Railroad in 1871 further bolstered local commerce. Despite devastating fires in 1872 and 1874 that led to the reconstruction of many buildings in brick, the town preserved its historic architecture, much of which still stands today. Selinsgrove is also home to Susquehanna University, founded in 1858, which continues to be a cornerstone of the community.
