Founded in 1818 by David Yoder, New Columbia, originally known as “Dogtown,” began with 132 lots laid out on the south side of Main Street. The town expanded over the years, adding more lots from the John Fisher Farm on the north side of Main Street. By 1868, New Columbia had developed into a bustling community with 59 homes and businesses, including a sawmill on Dog Run, cabinet and blacksmith shops, a hotel, and a church. The town’s growth continued, and by 1886, it boasted 100 houses, a hotel, a store, a post office, a train station, a boat shop, and approximately 350 residents. The rich history of New Columbia reflects the industrious spirit of its early settlers and their commitment to building a thriving community.
